BMO Bank of Montreal

BMO commercial clients manage EFT payments through BMO Online Banking for Business. Your BMO commercial account manager or cash management specialist sets up the service, confirms approval rules and issues an Originator ID, the identifier that marks your company as the originator on every file.

With Zefty, you enter your Originator ID and account details once. Every file you generate afterwards from your Zoho Books bills is built to CPA 005 and to what BMO Online Banking for Business expects, with totals and numbering handled for you. Validate a test file, then pay vendors in a few clicks whenever bills are due.

How it works

  1. Enable EFT origination with BMO

Ask your BMO commercial account manager to add EFT origination to your BMO Online Banking for Business profile. BMO confirms your limits, signing authorities and the users allowed to upload and approve files.

  2. Get your Originator ID

BMO issues your Originator ID once the service is active. It identifies your company on every file, so keep it exactly as BMO wrote it.

  3. Confirm your account details

Note the transit number of your branch, the institution number 001 and your business account number. Check them against a cheque or your account details page.

  4. Enter them in Zefty once

Choose BMO during setup, enter your business name as BMO has it, your Originator ID and your account details. Zefty keeps them for every file that follows.

  5. Generate, upload and approve

Select bills in Zefty, choose a payment date and download your file. Upload it in BMO Online Banking for Business, approve it, and Zefty records a payment in Zoho Books for each bill.

Help

  • Confirm your account details against a cheque before your first upload. You enter them once, and every BMO file that follows uses them.
  • Use test mode for your first file. You get a complete BMO-ready file to validate with the bank, and Zoho Books stays untouched.
  • Keep vendor banking details in Zoho Books. Zefty reads them at every sync, so a vendor updated there is paid correctly on the next file.
  • Every file is kept with a readable report you can file with your payment approval. It documents exactly what BMO received.

BMO and Zefty: common questions

BMO issues it when it activates EFT origination on your account, usually in the service confirmation from your commercial account manager. It is separate from your account number: one identifies your company as the originator, the other says where the funds are drawn from. Zefty asks for both.

It depends on the documents BMO requires. Plan for several business days to a few weeks, and start early: you can connect Zoho Books and finish your Zefty setup while you wait.

As many as you select in one run. Zefty builds one file for the whole selection and shows you the total before you generate. Check with BMO whether your service agreement sets a daily value or count limit, since the bank enforces that, not the file.

Update your account details in your Zefty settings and confirm with BMO that your Originator ID and settlement account stay the same. Generate a test file after the change before sending a live one.
